LinkedIn Changes are Coming! What Should Financial Advisors Do Now?

There are two things, maybe three, Financial Advisors should do now to protect and secure their LinkedIn Profile data. Although some have referred to the latest changes that LinkedIn will implement by March 31, 2017 as merely a “desktop user interface’ redesign, it’s already turning out to be much more.

The point here, LinkedIn rarely makes changes without adding or subtracting functionality. In a December 8, 2016 post on LinkedIn: Microsoft + LinkedIn: Beginning our Journey Together Satya Nadella said the tech firm plans to integrate LinkedIn into some of its products. In the immediate term, he said the two firms would pursue a specific set of integration scenarios, for example:

  • LinkedIn identity and network in Microsoft Outlook and the Office suite
  • LinkedIn notifications within the Windows action center
  • Enabling members drafting résumés in Word to update their profiles, and discover and apply to jobs on LinkedIn
  • Extending the reach of Sponsored Content across Microsoft properties
  • Enterprise LinkedIn Lookup powered by Active Directory and Office 365
  • LinkedIn Learning available across the Office 365 and Windows ecosystem
  • Developing a business news desk across our content ecosystem and MSN.com
  • Redefining social selling through the combination of Sales Navigator and Dynamics 365

With change comes the risk of features being removed or moved to a platform which is a paid model versus free. That is exactly what is happening as LinkedIn rolls out this next upgrade. In other posts, we’ve discussed some of the changes we see coming and it is our recommendation that Financial Advisors take some precautions with their LinkedIn data.

In an earlier post, Are Financial Advisors Prepared for LinkedIn’s Next Update? we discussed the importance of downloading your LinkedIn Account data. Your next move should be to create a .pdf of your LinkedIn Profile. By doing so you will be saving the content in your LinkedIn Profile. Your photos and any graphics you’ve added to your LinkedIn Profile will not be saved.

Also, your firm may provide you with an archiving solution so creating a .pdf of your LinkedIn Profile might be redundant. On the other hand, one can never be too safe and by creating your .pdf you have an additional source to go to if something were to happen to your LinkedIn Profile.

To create your LinkedIn Profile .pdf log into your LinkedIn account and click on “Profile” in the tool bar.

Next click on “Edit Profile”

Now slide your cursor over the black down arrow sitting next to the “View profile as” blue button. A drop-down menu will appear and you will want to click on “Save to PDF”.

Once you click on “Save to PDF” LinkedIn will create an instant .pdf of your LinkedIn Profile which will look something like this:

At the beginning of this post I suggested there might be a third way to protect your LinkedIn Connections. There is! Simply log in to your LinkedIn account and go to My Network on the tool bar.

Click on “Connections”.

A drop-down menu will appear. Click on the “Cog” symbol and another drop-down appears. Under Advanced Settings click on the “Export LinkedIn Connections” prompt.

Once you click on this prompt you will be directed to this menu:

Click on the blue “Export” button and your connections will be downloaded to a .csv formatted spreadsheet. Now you can load this into Outlook and manipulate it according to whatever initiative you have in mind.
